The club was formed in 1976 as the Post Office Research Sub Aqua Club (PORSAC). Some of the founder members can be seen in the picture above[*].
The club was later renamed as the BT Research Sub Aqua club (BTRSAC) following the split of the Post Office into two separate businesses – posts (the Post Office) and telecommunications (BT).
The club was originally affiliated to the Sub Aqua Association (SAA) but decided to switch to the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) in 1994.
By 2000 the club offered completely open membership. To recognise this fact it was renamed Sunstar SubAqua.
In 2006 we were one of the first Sub Aqua clubs to achieve a Clubmark accreditation.
In 2009 we received a certificate in recognition of our 15 years of BSAC membership.
* If you are an early member of the club we’d be pleased to hear from you – especially if you can help identify the people in the picture. If you click on the picture you’ll get a higher resolution version (1Mb) which might make it easier to recognize faces.
